Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for Street Sports Poulsbo

Who can I contact for more questions?

For more questions, please reach out to streetsportspoulsbo@gmail.com

What age can someone start training Jiu-Jitsu?

While martial arts training can start at any age, we offer age specific Jiu-Jitsu programs for babies, toddler, kids, and teens as young as age 1. We also have adult classes, beginner classes, and women only classes, ensuring there's a suitable program for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or experience.

Do I need any prior experience to join a class?

No prior experience is necessary! We offer the Jiu-Jitsu 101 program for those new to Jiu-Jitsu. As you progress, we recommend 20 classes, you can transition to more advanced classes, ensuring a steady and comprehensive learning experience.

What should I wear to my first class?

For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing that allows for easy movement. We will have a trial uniform that you can leave at the academy after class. We include a gi uniform with your enrollment fee to the academy.

How often should I attend classes to see progress?

Our school methodology is based on an attendance of 3-4 times per week for adults and 2-4 times per week for children. This allows students to build on the techniques presented throughout the week and make connections between concepts. In addition, this will allow the student to graduate on time. Keep in mind, the frequency of attendance can vary based on individual goals, schedules, and age.

Is sparring mandatory?

Sparring is an integral part of Jiu-Jitsu but is not mandatory, especially for beginners. Safety is our top priority, and sparring is typically introduced when a student is ready both physically and mentally. We recommend purchasing a mouth guard, available at the academy.

What gi uniform colors can I wear?

White, true blue, and black gis only. A rashguard is required under your gi. For all gis purchased outside the academy, a patch must be added. Patches are available for purchase at the academy. For visitors, we require gi uniforms with no other affiliation patches.

What should I wear to Nogi and Muay Thai?

Black rashguard, spats, and wrestling style shorts with no buttons, zippers, or pockets are required for class. Rashguard may be up to 10% of your current belt rank color. Street clothes will not be permitted for no-gi classes.

What are my options for paying my dues?

You can have your monthly dues electronically deducted from either your checking account (ACH, this is our preferred method and helps our small business by reducing the amount of processing fees we pay) or a debit/credit card account. This is known as electronic funds transfer (EFT). Or, with some memberships, you prepay your membership at the time of enrollment. Testimonials

My husband and son take the jiujitsu classes. They both love them. My mom comes with me to the yoga classes. I love Bonnie's teaching style. She's very encouraging, relaxing, and every class feels healing.

New white belt here, just getting into BJJ. Have attended group and private lessons with Professor Jaoa and I'm hooked (literally and figuratively)! Jaoa is a wonderful, positive communicator and does a fantastic job demonstrating and walking you through the techniques step-by-step. His gym is welcoming and friendly but the training is challenging and focused, and I leave class exhausted and with something new to work on or think about every time. Very happy I found this gym!

Thomas G.

If you ever wanted to start Jiu Jitsu, now is the time! Professor Joao and his wife, Bonnie, are incredible teachers and excellent humans all around. My 5 year old son has been going for less than a year and the knowledge retained is impressive. He’s already putting me in arm bars!
